Two gardens have opened together on the second date of our Open Garden season to give you a wonderful experience of Eastbourne’s gardens.
51 Carlisle Road, the 2019 winner of the Small Garden of the Year, is
a magical and secluded small south-facing garden with a little pool and mixed beds. A wide selection of shrubs, old roses, herbaceous plants and perennials mingle with specimen trees and climbers.
Opening in conjunction with this garden is the larger garden of Chelmsford Lodge, 12 Granville Road, where you will find the refreshments and stalls on the day, due to the larger area space available. It is a surprisingly large garden in the centre of a residential area surrounded by many mature trees, including a catalpa (Indian bean tree), mulberry, whitebeam, and very old elm. At the end of the garden is an arched gateway leading to a ‘secret’ garden with an arbour, trellis, roses,12 different fruit trees and a large pond.
The gardens are less than half a mile apart from each other, making them easy to walk between, or just a short hop in the car. To reach the area they are both in, take the seafront road towards Beachy Head, turn right into Carlisle Road and continue to the junction with Granville Road and turn left. Or use buses 3 & 3A. Street parking only.
The gardens are open in all weather, and entry is by donation. The Friends volunteers will be selling tickets for the raffle, and manning refreshment stalls. Please do note, refreshments will be served only at the Granville Road garden. Dogs, unfortunately, are not allowed at the Open Gardens.
