The Main Shop

The Main Shop is situated in the foyer of the hospital and has been operating since 1976, when the hospital first opened. It is headed by a shop manager, Sue Hitchen and is run by a dedicated team of volunteers. The shop provides the patients, visitors and staff with a wide variety of products from newspapers to nightwear, everything that might be required for a stay in hospital.  It is open seven days a week. No previous experience of shop work is required to volunteer in the shop as on the job training is provided. For this voluntary role it is important to be a team player, with good communication skills and common sense; a good sense of humour is always an asset.  Volunteers work a morning, afternoon or early evening session either in the shop or behind the scenes.  The shifts are: 9 am – 1 pm, 1 pm – 4.30 pm, 4.30 pm – 6.30 pm during the week; 10 am – 1 pm and 1 pm – 4 pm on Saturday and 1.30 pm – 4 pm on Sunday.

The Flower Shop

The Flower Shop is situated by the entrance to the car park at the front of the hospital and has been trading since 1986. It is managed by Sue Hitchen, FoEH Shop Manager and is staffed by a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer team. It is open from 9.00 am – 4.00 pm Monday to Friday and 1.30 pm – 4 pm on Saturdays. The team make both fresh and silk flower arrangements and these are on sale along with plants, bouquets and special orders. The volunteers are able to provide flowers for all occasions, for example table arrangements for special events or funeral flowers. A Flower Shop volunteer needs to be a people person with good communication skills, common sense and a love of plants and flowers. It is not necessary for volunteers to have experience of flower arranging.  Volunteers work either a morning or an afternoon session.

The Trolley Service

The Trolley Service has been in operation at Eastbourne District General Hospital since the Hospital first opened in 1976. The Friends now have 2 trolleys that visit the wards at 2 pm Monday to Friday, each manned by 2 volunteers. The service provides patients, staff and visitors with the opportunity to purchase drinks, toiletries, confectionery, magazines, newspapers, soft toys and stationery. Not only are the volunteers providing a much appreciated service they are also raising the profile of the Friends of the Eastbourne Hospital in a very positive way. If you are a people person with good common sense and a sense of humour this could be the voluntary role for you.  Volunteers work in pairs and come in to load up their trolley at 1 pm – the shift is approximately 2.5 hours.

A Sandwich Trolley round provides a service to staff seven mornings a week, 365 days a year, so that those who cannot leave their post can buy a tasty lunch.  Volunteers are asked to arrive at 8.30 am to stock the trolley – the shift is approximately 3 hours.

The Corner Shop (also known as the Staff Shop)

This shop is situated at the back of the hospital adjacent to the St Mary’s Suite. As the name suggests, due to location, its customers are predominately members of staff. It is open from 9.00 am – 3 pm Monday to Friday and sells a similar array of goods as the main shop but on a smaller scale. It’s run by volunteers under the supervision of the Main Shop Manager.  Volunteers work either a morning or an afternoon shift.
